It's more than just fish!Marine biology is the science that is dedicated to investigating aquatic life in watery habitats. On the grand scale, this includes studying how huge ocean currents carry sediments, how large algal blooms affect other aquatic life, and how populations of aquatic organisms are affected by global climate phenomenae and local events. On the more specific level, many marine biologists study specific species, locales, or trends in the health of various types of water-dwelling organisms.
A marine biologist may work in a lab evaluating water quality samples or various organism behaviors... or they may enjoy an active outdoor research lifestyle, traveling through aquatic environments on boats, engaging in ocean dives, kayaking through marshes, and swimming with sharks! Marine biology is a profession of particular value to our school's home state of Maryland. Our state's natural treasure is the Chesapeake Bay, home to a host of aquatic organisms and an intricate web of life dependent on its riches (see satellite image below). High school and undergraduate internships are available through a number of local organizations. |
